Spark of Blue

Bailey Island, ME. June 20, 2009.

Sometimes in her wandering eyes
I can see a spark of blue
There is something wild she hides
In the way her body moves

I think I might have known…
I think I might have seen…

I remember where she stood
I remember rocks and sea
In the wind my hands grew numb
As she called out tenderly

Why are you here? she said
Standing on the brink of faith
You know there’s something more
Just take one step with me…

But the rocks became a wall
And the sea rose dark and gray
Through the mist her light shone on
As I felt my body sway

I think I might have known…
I think I might have seen…

Sometimes when I’m waking up
She is there beside my dreams
If I lie still, hovering, numb
I can hear her clear voice sing

Why are you here? she said
Standing on the brink of faith
You know there’s something more
Just take one step with me…

There in the tumbling surf
Was all the magic I believed
Seek she whispers and you’ll find
This isn’t all it seems to be

So don’t drift away
Don’t scare these dreams
They’re falling from my hands
Into her warmth
And the sea rose
Blue and green
I uncovered my eyes

Why are you here? she said
Standing on the brink of faith
You know there’s something more
Just take one step with me…

This is a song I wrote when I was in the Peace Corps in Kyrgyzstan. There’s music, too, but I’m not quite ready to try typing in guitar tabs!
